What is Data center vs consumer GPU?
Data center GPUs (A100, H100, H200, B200, L40S) are built for servers, with large memory, ECC, high-speed interconnects and features such as MIG. Consumer GPUs (GeForce RTX) are built for desktops, with less memory but strong performance for their price.
Why it matters when renting a GPU
Consumer cards are often the cheapest way to run models that fit in 24 to 32 GB, and to render.
Data center cards are needed for large models, multi-GPU training, FP64 science and production SLAs.
Worked example
EverXCloud describes 31 data center, 24 workstation and 44 consumer GPU models. The RTX 5090 has 32 GB of GDDR7 at 1,792 GB/s; the H200 has 141 GB of HBM3e at 4,800 GB/s.
Frequently asked questions
- Is an RTX 4090 good for AI?
- Yes for models and workloads that fit in its 24 GB, such as image generation and inference of small or quantized LLMs.
